Holston High School students in Mrs. Julie Matlock's Appalachian History class
and Ms. Christine Mitten's English 9 and English 12 classes collaborated on a
project entitled "How Local History Affects Literature, Art, and Music". The
project began with a field trip to the Birthplace of Country Music Museum when
the mobile Virginia Museum of Art was available there. Students had the
opportunity to view native art and listen to Appalachian music and relate it to
events taking place in history at the time. History students then researched
important events in the history of Washington County at the Historical Society of
Washington County and presented their work to the English students, who created
pieces of literature, art, and music based on these events. Their work was displayed
at the Holston High School Art Show and Coffeehouse, which allowed students to
present their projects, artwork, and musical talents.
