Good morning, WCPS Families --
We wanted to address an incident that occurred this morning, Monday, November 11, 2024, at Meadowview Elementary School. Shortly after arrival, it was brought to the attention of administrators that a pre-K student brought a BB gun to school in their backpack. We learned the student brought the BB gun to school to show a friend. After seeing the BB gun in the students' backpack, the friend promptly reported it to their teacher, who confiscated the backpack immediately and notified the principal.
We do not believe the student brought the BB gun to school with the intent to cause harm, only with the purpose to show a friend. We are thankful for the quick actions of the student that reported this incident to their teacher.
We encourage all parents and guardians to take this time to speak with their student about the importance of gun safety, as well as to ensure and take proactive measures that any firearms in the home are stored safely and inaccessible to their children.
Washington County Public Schools takes incidents like this very seriously, as the safety and well-being of our students and staff is of the utmost importance. More information on the division policy focused on Weapons in School, can be found here: https://shorturl.at/CSLFl
