Recently PH student Jonathan P. or "Mighty's" grandmother, Deborah Kiser came to Ms. Sexton's class to share about the old ways of growing a garden and canning the produce. She talked through the whole process, and led the class through a demonstration of canning tomatoes using the water bath method. Canning is definitely an Appalachian tradition and part of our heritage. What a neat way of learning.

This past summer, Mr. Jared Mitchell, English teacher at Patrick Henry High School, led a group of students and staff on a ten-day trip to England through EF Tours. The trip was an amazing blend of culture, history, literature, and, of course, food! It featured excursions to the homes and graves of several writers, including Shakespeare, the Bronte sisters, Wordsworth, Dickens, and CS Lewis, as well as day trips to Chester, York, Oxford, Bath, and London! Students toured Windsor Castle, Westminster Abbey, and saw Buckingham Palace. They stood in the place where Shakespeare took his first breath and where he attended grammar school; saw the pavement where centuries of English monarchs were crowned; and sampled foods like fish and chips, bangers and mash, sticky toffee pudding, and traditional English breakfasts. They tackled navigating the Tube to catch West End productions of Wicked and Moulin Rouge. Finally, they returned home with a deep appreciation for the people, language, and culture that make England such a wonderful place to visit.
