Students doing an experiment with jelly beans

Seventh grade science students at Wallace Middle School recently put their
knowledge of the classification system into action as they worked to discover the
flavors of jellybeans. There are 50 official flavors of Jelly Belly jellybeans, and
they come in a wide variety of colors and unique markings. Students worked in
pairs, and each group was given 8 unidentified jellybeans. The students were not
given a labeled and colored Jelly Belly key, so they had to work through a
scientific process to figure out the flavors of their jellybeans. After coloring their
jellybeans and filling in their charts with the suspected flavors, they tasted each of
their jellybeans to see if they had correctly identified them. Students enjoyed this
activity, and it was a fun and tasty way to explore the classification system!
