WMS Students dissecting an owl pellet

During a joint unit on body systems, ecosystems, and animal adaptations, Wallace
Middle School students explored real-world examples of living things around them
by dissecting owl pellets. Owls usually consume mice or voles and regurgitate
solid waste. Students dissected owl pellets to determine which creatures the
predatory owls consumed. The students found at least three to six skulls along with
various bones from the prey. During this lab, students also learned about the
digestive system of owls and how they vary from others in a similar ecosystem.
Energy loss and food web discussions were shared to bridge the different topics.
