DMS Students Bike to School
On a crisp Fall morning, students from Damascus Middle School started
their day in a healthy way by biking to school from the Damascus Town Park.
They were joined by Communities in Schools Coordinator Brandon Dale and
Principal Jason Matlock and escorted by Damascus Town Police Department and
Washington County Sheriff’s Office members. This was the second Bike to
School Day for Damascus Middle School and was created as a partnership between
the school, Communities in Schools of Appalachian Highlands, town and county
police departments, the Town of Damascus, and local bike shops who provided
bikes and helmets free of charge. The goal was for the community and school to
collaborate to develop safe ways for students to actively travel to school. The riders
had a wonderful time, bonding in their shared experience of biking up the final long hill to the middle school!
