Kidz Place Activities and News
Family Fun Day – Emory & Henry College hosts each year a Family Fun Day. This is a family oriented day of fun, activities, games, and interacting with local community agencies. Watch for the date in March or April of each year.
Baby Fairs – We set up a table top display and/or booth at the Bristol Baby Fair held in April and the Johnston Memorial Hospital Baby Fair held in May (contingent upon schedules). We have give-aways and fun activities. Watch for these dates.
Washington County Public Library and the Kidz Place have participated in several joint activities.
In the past we have worked with the Highlands Festival, Farmer’s Market, and Imagination Library to host and participate in community outreaches.
Our Parent Resource Center (Kidz Place) library has over 23,000 items available for check out. It is a free service provided by Title I funds in our county. We have a two week loan period. We have selections of computer software, math and phonics activities, videos, DVDs, board games, leveled books for beginning readers, chapter books, and lots more! Our books are coded if Accelerated Readers. Our materials are suited for toddlers up to fifth grade level. We have worksheets and additional helps available upon request. Our staff is ready to help any way they can. NEW -- We have added our library inventory to our Kidz Place web site so that you may search for particular items of interest.
Each spring the preschool screenings are done for the upcoming school year. This is a federal program handled by the Title I monies for Washington County. Our office asks parents of children who will be four years of age by September 30 of that year to contact us at (276) 739-3115 in March to schedule a screening appointment for their child. All children eligible must be screened.
Story time is every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for children up to school age. Alternating years we will cover the alphabet and numbers. Each week the story time includes a story, craft, activity, and singing. Children enjoy this beginning level of structured story time and interacting with other children and adults. We celebrate holidays and other special times; like a visit from Santa, Halloween parade, searching for Leprechauns, having special visitors during the year, and then ending our year with a graduation.
A flyer is usually sent home during the last month of school announcing our special event(s) for the summer with dates and times. Special themed activities are usually planned. We have been Around the World, Camping, Dinosaur Days, Frog Days, Summer Smiles, Frontier Days, Community Helper Days, a Carnival, and many more. Special visitors can be expected during our summer activities.
Tail Waggin’ Tutors
The first Tuesday night of each month (unless schools are closed) we host the Tail Waggin’ Tutors. The Tail Waggin’ Tutors are therapy dogs which visit schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. Children and parents come and are introduced to the wonderful, magical world of books in a positive and unique way by reading with the dogs at their sides. In no time at all, the reading skills of most children will show improvement.
Our Kidz Place web site is filled with resources and has an up to date calendar of events, plus our library inventory.
