Students experience early Virginia Cultures.
On March 26, 2012 the fourth grade classes at Watauga Elementary were privileged to the Jamestown/Yorktown Foundation visit them During the visit the students got to experience first-hand the three major cultures that were vital to the success of Jamestown in 1607; the English, the Native Americans, and the Africans. The demonstrations presented allowed the students to try on armor worn by the English who were guarding the Jamestown fort, Native American clothing such as deerskins, and leather, and even some clothing worn by the Africans as they arrived in Jamestown. Many students were also able to role-play and handle the tools that were used during the early years at Jamestown. This presentation gave the students a good review while preparing for the Standards of Learning tests in May.
Mrs. Munsey helps students prepare to deposit "$100,000".
Students in Mrs. Munsey's economics class learned about money supply, money creation and the money multiplier through simulation. Students recently participated in a demonstration of the money creation process using a large $100,000 bill (divided into 100 pieces worth $1000 each). Students role-played as five bankers, five depositors, five borrowers, and a mathematician. Expansions of the money supply caused by successive deposits and loans were recorded in a ledger by each student and on the board so students could observe the process. Students learned about a bank's required reserves (a percentage of a bank's deposits that must be kept on-hand), and they learned how a single day's deposits can create money using the simple money multiplier which is based on the required reserve ratio.
High Point artists are ribbon winners!
March is Youth Art and Music in Our Schools Month across the country, and at High Point they celebrated in grand fashion. On March 22nd, High Point held it's fifth annual school art competition and choir concert. All students (K-5) displayed their artwork for parents and friends to view and 48 ribbons were handed out to the winners. There was also one trophy given to the winner of the "Best in Show" title, Olivia K. Mr. Cregger, Art Teacher, would like to thank all the students for a great show!
The High Point Choir consists of fourth and fifth grade students who make a year long commitment to singing. These students work very hard to perform throughout the year. During this concert we had seven soloists: Jasmine W., Mikan S., Megan D., Elijah D., Emilee S., Shawn S., and Abby L. These students, along with the other 35 singers and Ms. Vanessa Guffey (pianist) coordinated a beautiful concert of Disney songs. Here at High Point, the students really enjoy their Arts education!
Watauga kindergarten students show off their white teeth!
Two wonderful dental hygienists from Brown Dental came to visit Watauga's kindergartners in celebration of Dental Health Month. Ms. Tessa and Ms. Lynette talked to students about how to keep "sugar bugs" away to avoid cavities. Their special friend "Dudley" showed how to correctly brush and floss teeth. They also read a story about a first dental visit and discussed what happens for students who have never been so they wouldn't be scared. The students left knowing how to take care of their teeth, and also got to take home new tools: a toothbrush, toothpaste, and timer!
The Wallace Middle School 2011-2012 Science Bowl Team stands in front of the Jefferson Lab sign.
The Wallace Middle School Science Bowl Team traveled to Newport News, Virginia, on March 2nd to compete in the state science competition at Jefferson Lab. The six-member team consisted of Dusty C., Jacob D., Trevor M., Destiny O., Elissa T., and Cooper W. In addition to the science quizzing, the team participated in the design competition where they had to construct an electromagnet and build a “go-far” car out of various materials. Team Coaches, Valerie Leonard and Shannon Mutter, were very proud of the team for the time and effort the students put into the competition. Coaches and players also visited the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center where they watched the IMAX movie The Wild Ocean and participated in hands-on activities throughout the aquarium that taught them about animals and habitats of our region. The Wallace Middle School Science Bowl Club would like to recognize and thank their sponsor this year, The Washington County Family of Moose. Also, a special thanks to Beverly Tester and Mike Wallace for their support to our club this year.
