Damascus Middle School SCA Hosts Power Hour

Students sitting at tables in a cafeteria. On Tuesday, February 27, the Damascus Middle School Student Cooperative Association (SCA) hosted our annual Power Hour, a time for student discussion and reflection on the issue of bullying within our school community.

Student leaders met with small groups within each grade level and led powerful discussions about areas in which bullying is likely to occur, such as at lunch, on the bus, or in the halls, and developed a list of suggestions for ways to help people get along better.  This was a productive time of sharing personal experiences and great ideas, such as “Friend Friday,” where students sit with someone new during lunch on Fridays and purchasing a “Buddy Bench” where students can sit when they need a buddy.  The goal of the SCA was to start a discussion, helping students be more aware of the ways each of them can be a part of a bigger plan to stop bullying in our school. The SCA is also sponsoring an anti-bullying slogan contest in the spring, and some students have already starting creating slogans!  The SCA is sponsored by Mrs. Lisa Blackburn and Mrs. Amy Caywood.
