Speaking for the Gifted 2012
Program Description: Gifted children and teens possess unique social, emotional and intellectual needs that must be understood before they can be addressed in a school setting. In this session, Dr. Delisle reviews these needs, including understanding the emotional intensities that often accompany giftedness, accepting personal imperfections (...and those of others), finding and keeping true friends, and enjoying one's abilities in the context of a wider world. Following this introduction, Dr. Delisle will highlight more than 15 classroom-tested lessons and strategies that instill compassion, self-awareness, leadership, and higher-level thinking among gifted students.

Our school division has a newly revised plan for the education of the gifted. The plan is in response to changes that the General Assembly has made in the code that governs Virginia's schools. Under the new regulations school divisions are directed to focus their efforts on manageable goals in five areas: Identification, Curriculum Development, Delivery of Services, Staff Development, and Parent and Community Involvement, all must be accomplished by 2005.
In addition to the changes that have been noted to the plan for serving gifted children, the General Assembly has required that the school division provide training for all professional staff members in characteristics of gifted learners. Plans are underway to provide the training that is needed for teachers and administrators.
