Josh H. works on his Glogster
Glade Spring Middle School students created Glogsters as a way to introduce themselves to students in China. Eighth graders in Mrs. Doss’ World Geography class were asked to create Glogsters about themselves by Assistant Principal, Dr. Becky Austin. This summer, Dr. Austin will be traveling to China visiting various schools. She talked to the students about the questions they would ask of the students in China. Their responses ranged from “do you wear uniforms to school?” to “what types of television shows or movies do you watch?” As the students talked and brainstormed questions, Dr. Austin told them the students in China would probably have similar questions for them. She then asked them to create a Glogster focusing on themselves; introducing themselves to the students she would meet in China.
Dr. Austin was recognized as the 2011 Teacher of Excellence by the Virginia Education Association. As part of this recognition, this past fall, she was presented with a check for Glade Spring Middle School by the National Education Association. In February, Dr. Austin was chosen by the NEA Foundation to participate in the China Fellows Program. As part of the program, she is taking an online course to learn more about China and the importance of a global education for today’s students. In June, she will travel to China with 34 educators from across the United States. There she will visit several schools meeting with teachers and students. Additionally, she will share the Glogsters from Glade Spring Middle School with the students in China. This fall Dr. Austin will discuss her experiences in China with the students in Mrs. Doss’ World Geography classes.
