Students get ready to cheer on the Braves
The Holston High School Class of 2004 traveled south to Atlanta on May 21st to celebrate their upcoming graduation. On Friday, students visited Stone Mountain Park, where they had the chance to view the Confederate Memorial carved in the side of the mountain. After traveling to the top of the mountain by sky lift, students were treated to a breathtaking view of Atlanta and the surrounding area. The rest of the day was spent in the park where students had the opportunities to visit a antebellum plantation, ride a riverboat, play miniature golf, and see a 4-D movie. After leaving Stone Mountain, the group visited the world famous Varsity drive-in restaurant before heading to an Atlanta Braves game. The baseball game was a hit, as one student was interviewed on TV during the game and Mrs. Adams and Ms. Snead almost caught a foul ball.
On Saturday, students were up bright and early for a tour of downtown Atlanta. Students viewed the Centennial Olympic Park, CNN, the Georgia Dome, Underground Atlanta, and other local points of interest. The tour ended with a stop at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, where students viewed his tomb, toured Ebenezer Baptist Church, and then drove past Dr. King's childhood home. After the tour of Atlanta, the group headed for Six Flags for a day of thrills. After being turned upside down, thrown sideways, and being dropped from the sky at speeds of 70 miles per hour, students reluctantly headed for home. The trip was a huge success and enjoyed by everyone.

AHS Biology students analyze water in the Valley Street stream.
Abingdon High School biology students recently conducted dissolved oxygen tests on the stream running along Valley Street. This lab determined the oxygen concentration in water samples which, in turn, represent the aquatic primary productivity and health of the stream. Oxygen is essential for life in the stream. Changes in the environment can affect the amounts of oxygen available for living organisms in the stream and, thus, can affect the water quality. Good News! This stream has average amounts of dissolved oxygen, which is enough to sustain most aquatic species that would live there. The AP biology students found this lab lots of fun. Mrs. Brandi Norman is the AP Biology teacher.
